Wes Curry Appointed to 12th Circuit

Last month, Governor Tate Reeves appointed Wes Curry to the 12th Circuit Court, filling a vacancy left by Jon Mark Weathers. Judge Curry has served since 2017 as a municipal court judge in Hattiesburg, and has served since 2012 as a Justice Court Judge for Forrest County. I've known Judge Curry a long time and can attest to his devotion to faithfully upholding the laws and Constitution of Mississippi and the United States. He's going to do a great job, and I'm thrilled that he was chosen for this position!

Celebrating First Responders at the Hattiesburg 9/11 Memorial

I enjoyed spending time with Hattiesburg Fire Academy instructor Jourdan Arnold and other Hattiesburg firemen last month at the Hattiesburg 9/11 Memorial. Every year, first responders, city officials, and every day Mississippians gather to honor the lives lost on 9/11. It's been 23 years since that dark day in America's history, and we have not forgotten. We will never forget. I was proud to stand with these brave men on this important day.

Mississippi Pecan Festival

I had a great time at this year's Mississippi Pecan Festival in Perry County! Every year, this event draws folks from across the state and region to take part in the festivities. From talent shows to bake-offs to great food to pet contests, the Pecan Festival is always fun. I got the chance to thank Richton Police Chief Jimmy Bunch and Perry County Sheriff's Office Investigator Bryan Shimp for their work keeping everyone safe and the event running smoothly. If you weren't able to make it this year, be sure to add it to your calendar for 2025!

Forrest/Perry Counties Drug Court Graduation

I was proud to take part in last month's Forrest/Perry Counties drug court graduation. This is a great program that gives a second chance to Mississippians struggling with addiction, and it reduces incarceration rates for our people. I'm grateful to the men and women in the legal system who work to give hope to those who were previously without it. I'm proud to have supported this program as a member of your state Senate.

Upcoming Government Structure Committee Hearing

I'll be holding a hearing for the Government Structure Committee I chair on October 23. We'll be discussing a variety of topics, including whether to keep the office of the Mississippi Insurance Commissioner as a statewide elected position, to determine if it would be more efficient to combine the Public Service Commission and Public Utilities Staff, and to hear from former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, who will be talking about his state's efforts to consolidate agencies and restructure their government to be more effective.

I've said all along that my goal for this new committee is to find new ways to make Mississippi's government work better for the people, saving tax dollars and speeding up the delivery of essential services. I'm hopeful this hearing will give us direction for our efforts to do just that in the upcoming 2025 Legislative Session.

Russ Middleton Gets a Big One During Velvet Weekend

My friend, Russ Middleton, got a huge buck during opening velvet weekend last month! I know he'll remember this one for the rest of his life. Congratulations, Russ, and happy hunting to all those who are taking part this season!
